Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has expressed frustration with his fellow tech executives for aligning themselves with Donald Trump, accusing them of abandoning their previous political positions to seek favor with the incoming administration.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sweeney criticized the apparent shift in allegiance, stating, "After years of pretending to be Democrats, Big Tech leaders are now pretending to be Republicans, in hopes of currying favor with the new administration." Although he didn't directly name specific executives, his comments were likely aimed at figures like Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, who recently announced significant changes to the content moderation and workplace culture at Facebook, Instagram, and Threads—moves that appeared aimed at appealing to Trump’s right-wing supporters.
Sweeney’s remarks followed reports of multiple major tech companies, including Google and Apple, pledging millions of dollars to Trump’s inauguration fund, seemingly in an effort to secure favorable treatment from the incoming president. Notably, these companies are all facing government antitrust investigations, and Epic Games itself has fought similar legal battles with Google. Sweeney’s accusations suggested that their sudden political pivot could be an attempt to influence regulation in their favor.
"Beware of the scummy monopoly campaign to vilify competition law as they rip off consumers and crush competitors," Sweeney warned in his post.
While Sweeney may be outspoken in his criticism of Big Tech, his own leadership has been under scrutiny. In 2023, Epic Games laid off more than 800 employees, roughly 16% of its workforce, as part of a major restructuring. The company also sold off its Bandcamp division and spun off SuperAwesome, its kid-focused studio, leading to another 250 job losses.
Despite these layoffs, Sweeney was quick to celebrate the company’s financial turnaround, declaring at Unreal Fest in February 2024 that Epic was "back in the black" following the cuts. He also noted that both Fortnite and the Epic Games Store had set new records for user engagement and revenue.
